On May 21st I headed out on my first trip with the RV.  My goal was to tour SW Colorado for most of a week then head to Albuqueque, New Mexico to spend Memorial Day weekend.  My first stop for the night was in Denver where I visited a long time friend and former resident of Omaha.

Day two took me out I-70 to Copper Mountain, down through Leadville, over Monarch Pass to Gunnison then down the Silver Thread Scenic Byway to South Fork, Colorado. I set up camp at the Rainbow Lodge and RV Park.  I chose this park because its in the center of town at the junction of CO 149 and US 160.  Had an excellent dinner next door at the Rockaway Cafe & Steakhouse.

Views along the Silver Thread Scenic Byway.

Day 3 was over Wolf Creek Pass, through Pagosa Springs and Durango to Silverton, Colorado.  Stopped in at the information center and toured the Old Hundred Gold Mine there before checking into the Red Mountain Motel and RV Park.

A few pictures - South Fork to Silverton, Colorado. The section of the highway from Durango to Silverton (including Coal Bank PAss and Molas Pass) are part of the San Juan Skyway Scenic Byway.

RV and rented jeep in Silverton

On day 4 I rented a jeep from the motel and headed up into the San Juan Mountains on the Alpine Loop Back Country Byway.  By renting the jeep from the same place I was staying, I got a discount on the jeep rental. Check out my page of Alpine Loop Photos.

On return from the day jeeping in the mountains, I found an emergency telephone message waiting for me.  Calling back to Wisconsin, I found out that my sister was in a coma and not doing well.  I packed up the RV to head towards home in the morning.

Special thanks to the owners of the Red Mountain Motel and RV Park.  They were most helpful during this trying time. I strongly recommend setting up camp here for your tour of the Silverton area.

Thanks also to the San Juan County Sheriff's Department for tracking me down and making sure I got the message.  I thoroughly enjoyed meeting the residents of Silverton, Colorado.  Its a very friendly town.  I WILL be back to complete my vacation - just not sure when.
