Over the 30 years I worked for EMD, I worked on generator sets, marine engines, drill rigs and locomotives. After a few months of classes and on the job training, I was on my own to complete an installation in Ibaden, Nigeria. This was single unit MP45 generator set for a water treatment plant 18 miles out of the city. The generator was used for powering pumps at the dam, bringing water up to the plant, powering the plant and the high lift pumps to pump the treated water to town.
In the way home from Nigeria, I took time to tour a little of Europe. I stopped in Madrid, Geneva and Amsterdam. An return to EMD, I was assigned to cover a power generation district in Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York State. Early in 1973, I was re-assigned to cover power generating equipment in New England. My customers were New England Power, Narragansett Electric and Cape & Vineyard Electric. At the time I was responsible for service contracts on most of these generator sets. When the contracts were not renewed, my territory expanded to include all of New England and much of New York State. During 1974, I took a break from New England for an overseas assignment. Went back to Nigeria for a quick inspection of the generator set there. Then, on to Dubai to install generator sets in the United Arab Emirates. Worked 2 sites outside Dubai. While there, the Concorde paid a visit to Dubai. In 1976, I was back in the United Arab Emirates for aninstallation at Abu Dhabi. This was a five unit site. Next to the site I was working on were a large group of EMD skid units with buildings being erected around them. While in country, I also did an inspection trip to a drill rig in the gulf.
