During making plans for my January 2014 trip South for riding bicycles, I stopped in Las Cruces, NM to visit a Nam vet friend and his wife.  Decided to visit White Sands, being in the "area".

The "sand" is actually gypsum.  The wind blows the gypsum into dunes.  The "white sands" are blinding bright on sunny days.  The gypsum drifts like snow, necessitating plowing the park road.  There is a marked trail on the loop section of the road.

For the more adventurous (and with permits) there is a back country trail.  At the trailhead, I saw no indication where a trail headed from the trailed marker.  I would think that with everything white and the shifting dunes, it would be easy to get lost on the back country without GPS and having marked where your vehicle was parked.

We opted to walk the boardwalk nature trail.  Was a very interesting walk.  Even encountered a wedding ceremony concluding as we started the short walk on the boardwalk.
