On the way home from Albuquerque in February, 2013, I took a day playing "tourist".  The goal was tour and photograph Pecos National Historic Park outside of Santa Fe.  Since I had a early start and planned over 2 days on the road, I drove the Turquoise Trail from Albuquerque to Santa Fe.  More info can be found in the Caputin Volcano page.

Pecos National Historical Park is on the Glorieta mesa in the Sangre de Cristo mountains.  The settlement was also along the Santa Fe Trail.  Well located between the Pueblo Indians of the SW and the Plains Indians.  While there were skirmishes in the area, Pecos was generally a "fire free zone".  Spanish, pueblo residents, plains tribes, settlers, and adventurers met to trade.

Checked in at this park.  Visited with the ranger and picked up the guide of the ruins.  I could have walked from the Visitor's Center, but was not sure how long my knee would hold up.  Drove up to the Park Headquarters (up at the ruins).

Walked to and through the "newer" ruins.  Since my knee was feeling OK, walked further to the next group of ruins.  The dominant feature is the ruins of the Spanish Mission.  Over the years, there were many settlements at Pacos.  First settlers arrived about 800 CE.  At its peaks, Pacos had a population of over 2000.

Some of the photos I took during my visit to Pecos National Historic Park.

In addition to the Pecos ruins, the Historical Park also includes the Glorieta Pass Battlefield (Civl War), Forked Lighting Ranch, and other features.
