Traveling from Iowa to Las Cruces, NM, it was not much out of the way to check out Carlsbad Caverns National Park. Those that know me, know that detours to visit National Parks, Monuments, and Historic sites is normal action.  I was very impressed with Carlsbad Caverns.

I stopped at the ranger desk, asking basics about the cave.  Concerns were how far to walk to see much and hoped I was not committed to a one-way walk.  No problems there. Also asked about Guadalupe Mountains National Park (just down the road and on my route).  The ranger advised it was mostly a hiking park, but some worth the stop.

Showed my Senior Pass and ID and got my ticket.  No lines waiting for the elevator down 700 feet to the cave.  I COULD have walked down to the main section of the cave - not for me with my legs/knee.  The park brochure the natural entrance and route down into the Big Room.

Not far from the elevators to the "Big Room" of the cavern.  It is massive!  When I reached the "short cut", I knew I would not be able to walk the second section of the trail.  I settled to turn and head toward the exit (which is still further than I had already walked).

Don't miss the one-way gravel road "Walnut Canyon Desert Drive".  The drive gives you a flavor for the surrounding countryside.
