I had 2 nights and 1 day to explore the Farmington area.  I have to say, I was not impressed.  I did enjoy my visit to Aztec Ruins.  Weather (a bit windy) was not good for a bike ride.  Heard they was a trail along the river but the hotel clerk did not where it was.  One of my New Mexico books described Angel Peak Scenic Area, A little over 20 miles form my hotel.  Looking like a good place to export on a windy day.

Angel Peak Scenic Area is not well know, even by those living in New Mexico.  Its a Bureau of Land Management area a little South of Bloomfield, NM on US 550.  The area offers picnic areas, views from the badlands, and (it believe) toilet vaults.  There was a couple camping at one of the picnic shelters at the end of the gravel road in the Scenic Area.
